Gems Bonanza is an Aztec themed grid slot from Pragmatic Play, released on 29th October 2020. It plays on an 8x8 board with 64 symbols per spin, pays when 5 identical symbols touch side by side or one above another, and carries high volatility with a maximum win of 10,000x the stake. The provider's game page states an RTP of 96.51%.

There is no free spins round here. The bonus is called Gold Fever and is reached by collecting winning symbols in a meter, while five colour-coded modifiers interrupt the base game along the way. This review explains each part in plain terms, sets out the RTP figures a UK player may meet, and points to the official demo.

Blocks, not lines: how wins form

A win is a block of 5 identical symbols joined horizontally or vertically. The paytable has no card suit symbols: it consists of 7 gemstones in different colours, and the largest blocks, of 25+ symbols, pay 50 to 1,000x the bet.

Each win sets off a tumble: the winning gems are removed, replacements drop in from above, and the board is checked again, for as long as new clusters keep forming. The wild never arrives on an ordinary spin or tumble. It reaches the board only through two modifiers, Wild Gem and Lucky Wilds, which makes those two more important than their names suggest.

The five spin modifiers

Coloured markings appear on the board in random positions, underneath the gems. A win that lands over a marked spot sets off 1 of 5 modifiers, chosen by the colour of the marking, and it plays once the tumbles of that spin have finished.

Marking Modifier What it does
Blue Nuclear Clears every symbol from the screen; a fresh set drops in
Pink Wild Gem Picks one symbol type at random and turns each copy of it wild
Yellow/brown Squares Adds 2x2 blocks of one symbol
Red Colossal Symbols Places one large block of a single symbol: 3x3, 4x4 or 5x5
Green Lucky Wilds Scatters 5 to 15 wilds over the grid

When more than one is won on the same spin, they play in a fixed order: Nuclear, Wild Gem, Squares, Colossal Symbol and Lucky Wilds. None of them can be chosen or timed by the player; where the markings appear and what the modifiers add is random.

Gold Fever: the bonus without free spins

Winning symbols removed by tumbles are counted in the Gold Fever meter, which stands to the right of the reels. It takes 114 winning symbols to fill it, and the count goes back to zero as soon as the tumbles stop. So the bonus has to be earned within a single spin - progress is not carried over to the next one.

Gold Fever has five tiers. On each of them every modifier plays once, in the fixed order above, and wins are multiplied: 2x on the first tier, then x4, x6, x8 and x10 on levels 2 to 5. Lottomart lists what each further step costs: 116 symbols for level 2, then 120 symbols, then 125 symbols, and 132 symbols for the last one. If the modifiers of a tier run out before enough symbols are gathered, the feature is over. The 10x win multiplier of the last level is the top one in the game.

Gems Bonanza RTP and volatility

The provider's page states 96.51%. Lottomart's game details state 92.09%, and the FAQ on the same Lottomart page gives 94.53%. Three figures for one title mean one thing for a player: the only number that applies to you is the one in the information screen of the game at the casino where you play. RTP is a theoretical long-run average and does not forecast any session.

Volatility is high, given as 5/5 in the specialist review. In practice the return is spread unevenly, with many spins that pay little or nothing and a small number of Gold Fever rounds that account for the larger results. The 10,000x maximum is a cap, not an aim. Outcomes are random on every spin, and no stake size or pattern of play changes that.

Bonus buy

The general release has a bonus buy priced at 100x the current total bet: the next spin starts with a full meter and Gold Fever begins. The feature then follows its usual rules. Whether the option is shown depends on the version your casino runs, so check the game itself.

The sources we checked describe Gems Bonanza as a single title and name no sequel. Lottomart points to two other Aztec-themed games from the same provider: Aztec Bonanza, and Aztec Gems Deluxe, which shares the statue meter. They are separate games with their own figures. Every number on this page belongs to Gems Bonanza only.

What we like

  • The provider publishes the RTP on its own game page
  • Each modifier has one clear rule and a fixed order of play
  • Gold Fever levels and multipliers are stated openly, from 2x to 10x
  • Official demo available; playable on desktop PC, Android and Apple devices

What to keep in mind

  • RTP at a UK operator is listed more than four points below the default
  • One operator page gives two different RTP figures for the same game
  • High volatility, given as 5/5 in the specialist review
  • Meter progress is lost whenever a tumble sequence ends

Who it suits

It suits players who enjoy grid slots and do not mind a busy screen: markings, modifiers and a meter all run at once. It is a weak match for anyone who wants a classic free spins round, or a calm game with regular small returns. If you try it for money, fix a budget beforehand and do not raise stakes to recover losses. The demo is the sensible first step.

Verdict

By the criteria we publish - openness of the figures, a free official demo, clarity of the rules - Gems Bonanza does reasonably well. The mechanics are documented in detail and the provider states its default return. It loses marks because the figures shown to UK players are lower and inconsistent, even within one operator page. The rating describes the game as a product and carries no suggestion about results.
