Great Rhino Megaways is a high-volatility Pragmatic Play slot from April 2020 with up to 200,704 ways to win. The provider's game page publishes a 96.50% RTP and a maximum win of up to 20,000x the bet. UK operators list lower returns for the same title: 94.48% at 7bet and 92.04% at Lottomart. Stakes at both run from £0.20 to £5 per spin.

The game's one real decision comes at the start of the bonus: more free spins with a small starting multiplier, or fewer spins with a large one. This review explains that choice without pretending one option is better, sets the conflicting figures side by side, and points to the official demo, where the whole round can be tried for nothing.

What Great Rhino Megaways is

It is the Megaways remake of an older savannah slot and, according to 7bet, the first Megaways title from Pragmatic Play, built under a licence from BTG. The layout is 6 reels + 1 horizontal top reel, which sits above reels 2-5. Each main reel shows 2 to 7 symbols per spin, and that changing height is what produces the ceiling of 200,704 ways.

How a spin is decided

There are no paylines. A payout needs 3 identical symbols on adjacent reels (starting from the leftmost), wherever they sit on those reels. The one exception is the Cheetah, which rewards for 2 identical symbols. Winning symbols are then removed and replaced, and tumbles continue until no new wins can form, so a single paid spin may settle several times before it ends.

Great Rhino Megaways Slot Review: You Choose the Free Spins, the Casino Chooses the RTP - key figures

The game has 12 unique symbols. The low side is a set of classic card symbols drawn in a wooden style; the high side is flamingos, hyenas, crocodiles, gorillas and cheetahs. The rhino is the wild, and a golden rhino coin is the scatter. Sources do not agree on what six cheetahs pay - 25x in the 7bet paytable, 50 times the stake in the Bigwinboard review - nor on where the wild may land. Bigwinboard places it only on the top reel, 7bet on reels 2-5 and on the top horizontal reel, Lottomart on all reels except for the first reel. When listings differ like this, the paytable inside the game is the only reference that counts.

Great Rhino Megaways free spins: the choice

Four or more scatters open the bonus, and the player picks a mode before it starts. With four scatters the options are 15 spins starting at a 1x multiplier, 10 spins starting at 5x, or 5 spins starting at 10x. Five and six scatters raise the number of spins in every option; the table below gives the 7bet figures. A fourth option, Mystery Choice, draws a random number of free spins and a random starting win multiplier.

Scatters Starting at 1x Starting at 5x Starting at 10x
4 15 free spins 10 free spins 5 free spins
5 19 free spins 14 free spins 9 free spins
6 23 free spins 18 free spins 13 free spins

Inside the round the win multiplier increases by +1x each time a tumble win lands, without limit, and at 7bet it is described as a multiplier that does not reset after spins. The choice therefore trades time for a head start: many spins give the counter room to grow from a low base, few spins begin high and have less room. Neither is a better bet in any provable sense - the modes are different shapes of the same random game, and the fewer the spins, the more uneven the outcome tends to be.

Retriggers are reported differently. The provider says 3+ scatters landing simultaneously during the feature add another five free spins with no limit; the Bigwinboard review says another 4 scatters add 5 additional free spins. We follow the provider and flag the difference.

Great Rhino Megaways RTP and volatility, without the gloss

The default return is 96.50%. British players are more likely to meet 94.48% or 92.04%, because those are the configurations 7bet and Lottomart publish. The difference is real money over time: RTP is the theoretical share of all stakes paid back across a very large number of spins, and a lower figure means the game keeps more. It predicts nothing about one evening. Read the number on the information screen of the game at your own casino before staking.

Volatility is high on every listing. Most spins return nothing or less than the stake, and the long-run payout is concentrated in a small share of bonus rounds. The maximum win is a rule, not a forecast, and here even the rule is disputed: up to 20,000x the bet on the provider's page, 50,000x of your bet at 7bet. Results are random on each spin, and no stake size or timing changes them.

Ante Bet and buying the bonus

With the Ante Bet enabled the stake is raised by 25%, and the chance of triggering free spins doubles. It is a way of paying more per spin to see the bonus more often; it does not improve the return. As for a purchase option, 7bet lists Buy Bonus as not available, so at that UK operator the round is reached through scatters alone.

The Great Rhino series

The series began with the inaugural Great Rhino slot and later added Great Rhino Megaways and Great Rhino Deluxe. There is also a Christmas themed version titled Christmas Carol Megaways, described as carrying all the same stats and features. The names are close and the artwork closer, so confirm the word Megaways on the loading screen, and treat any figure quoted for another title of the series as belonging to that title only.

What we like

  • The provider publishes the default RTP and the win cap on its own page
  • The bonus round gives the player a clear, explained choice of modes
  • UK operators state their own RTP, so the configuration can be verified
  • An official free demo is available

What to keep in mind

  • UK configurations pay back less than the default 96.50%
  • Sources disagree on the maximum win, wild positions and the retrigger rule
  • High volatility, sharper still in the short free spins modes
  • Buy Bonus is not available at 7bet

Is it a game for you?

It suits players who want a say in how the bonus plays out and who can sit through long quiet spells. It does not suit anyone looking for frequent modest returns. If you try it for money, decide the budget beforehand, regard it as the price of entertainment, and stop when it is spent. The demo costs nothing and shows every mode.

Editorial verdict

On our methodology the game lands in the upper middle. Its rules are easy to explain, the provider states a default RTP and a win cap, and the demo is official and free. It loses ground because the facts around it are untidy: three sources give three answers on the wild, two on the top payout, and the UK return is lower than the headline figure. The rating reflects how openly and consistently the product is documented, and makes no claim about what it will pay.
