Sugar Rush is a Pragmatic Play cluster pays slot on a 7x7 grid, released on 30th June 2022. Five or more matching sweets that touch horizontally or vertically make a win, winning symbols tumble away, and the positions they leave can grow multipliers of up to 128x. The provider's page lists an RTP of 96.50%; volatility is high and the maximum win is 5,000x the bet.

That 96.50% is the top of a range. One review lists three versions - 96.5%, 95.5% and 94.5% - and 7bet, a UK operator, states approximately 94.5% for the game it offers. So the first question is not whether Sugar Rush is a good slot but which Sugar Rush you have in front of you.

How a cluster forms and what a tumble does

There are no lines to follow. A win is a cluster of at least five identical symbols connected to each other in horizontal or vertical directions; diagonal neighbours do not count. When a cluster pays, its symbols are removed and new ones drop in from above. If the drop creates another cluster, the process repeats until no new win appears, all within one paid spin.

Sugar Rush Slot Review: Multiplier Spots, Three RTP Versions and the Demo - key figures

Seven symbols pay: three gummy bears at the lower end and four higher value candy symbols above them, with the pink lollipop as the top-paying symbol. The largest clusters, of 15 or more, are worth 40-150x the bet for the better candies. No wild symbol appears at any point, so every cluster has to be built from the real thing.

Multiplier spots: how a square reaches 128x

This is the idea the game is built on. When a winning symbol is removed, its position on the grid is marked. If a winning symbol is later removed from a marked spot, a multiplier is placed there, starting at 2x and doubling each time a symbol hits, up to 128x. A win that lands on several multiplier spots has their values added together before they are used.

In the base game the memory is short: multipliers are cleared from the board between paid spins, so a square has to be hit repeatedly within one chain of tumbles to grow. Most spins never get that far. The mechanic is transparent, though - the marked squares are visible, and you can see exactly which part of the grid is worth more than the rest.

Sugar Rush free spins: the spots that stay

The scatter is a gumball machine. Land 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 scatters and the round begins with 10, 12, 15, 20 or 30 free spins respectively. The one rule that changes: marked spots and multipliers last the entire round instead of being wiped after each spin. Squares keep doubling from where they stood, which is why almost all of the game's potential sits in this feature. The same scatter counts during the round award an additional 10, 12, 15, 20 or 30 free spins.

Sugar Rush RTP: three versions, one name

Pragmatic Play publishes 96.50% on the game's page, and that is the highest possible value. Casinos may instead run a 95.5% or a 94.5% version, and 7bet states approximately 94.5%. The figure is the same whether free spins are triggered or bought, where buying is offered. RTP is a long-run average over a huge number of spins; it does not describe a session, and it cannot be improved by how you bet. What you can do is read the information screen at your casino and know which version you are playing.

Volatility, hit frequency and a rare top prize

A hit frequency of 34.48% and high volatility are not a contradiction. Roughly a third of spins return something, but many of those returns are smaller than the stake, and the meaningful results depend on clusters landing on grown multipliers. The 5,000x maximum is the same as in the Fruit Party games, yet far harder to reach: the max win frequency is given as 1 in 2.34 million, against 1 in 495,050 for Fruit Party 2. The cap is a limit in the rules, not something to play towards, and every spin is random.

Bonus buy and the UK

The game is designed with an option to buy free spins for 100x the bet. At 7bet, a UK operator, Buy Bonus is listed as not available, so there the round is reached through scatters only.

Where it sits among Pragmatic Play's sweets and fruit

Sugar Rush borrows its looks from Sweet Bonanza and part of its grid play from Fruit Party and Fruit Party 2, and is often described as a blend of the three. The difference is structure: here you can see in advance which squares are marked. Figures do not carry over between these games, so check the title before trusting a number you read elsewhere.

What we like

  • Provider states the default RTP on the game's own page
  • Marked spots make the multiplier mechanic visible and easy to follow
  • Official demo available; runs on desktop, tablet and mobile without downloads
  • No wilds and no paylines: two rules explain every win

What to keep in mind

  • Lower RTP versions of 95.5% and 94.5% are in use
  • High volatility, with a top prize that lands 1 in 2.34 million
  • Base game multipliers reset between paid spins
  • No progressive jackpot

Who it suits

It suits players who like to watch a mechanism work and who treat the stake as the price of the entertainment. It does not suit anyone expecting the grid to repay patience: a run of dead spins does not bring a win closer. Try the demo, set a limit before playing for money, and do not chase losses.

Verdict

Sugar Rush scores well on our methodology. The provider publishes the default return, the demo is free, and the central mechanic is shown on screen rather than hidden in a paytable. It loses marks for the spread of RTP versions behind one name and for a maximum win that is, by the published frequency, very remote. A clear and well-explained product, and a volatile one.
